I stand corrected. I had forgotten that little tidbit, but still I will argue one small point. Bilbo gave Sam a bag of gold which he refers to as of the
Smaug vintage. First, Bilbo was given two chests from the treasure of Lonely Mountain from the one-fourteenth share given to Bard. Of those two chests, one was filled with gold,
the other with silver. Secondly, as noted, he refered to it as the
Smaug vintage. He makes no reference to the
golblin gold of Bert, Tom, and William, hidden 'not far from the track by the river'. That gold (described as pots full of gold coins), which he split with Gandalf, was not unsubstantial, since once loaded onto the ponies, Bilbo and Gandalf had to walk the rest of the distance home.
I submit, still, that a fair amount of that treasure could, indeed, have been left hidden at Bag End.
