Re: The Gathering of F2P Beta Testers

That was a major brain-swap I meant 'regular mathoms/well kept mathoms from the humanoids in the appropriate level range in the trollshaws (best to farm via Inspired Greatness via the Pool). I assure you Bree rep wasn't a major part of what enabled me to get my LL pack at 25, because the item turn ins weren't adjusted at that point. Gift Mathoms were used, but I simply went around the shire and did those quests. You've got to do all the appropriate level/class deeds and deed through Erin Luin/Shire/Bree at that point to get the 600 TP, but it can be done, I did. The meager TP from reputation lets you get a few that way to make up for some class deeds you may not have finished.

Its not 700TP for LL base price, its 600TP for LL base price (Still is, and has been since I arrived in B1).

People seem to be latching on to +Sapience's 700TP number. It'd probably help if it was explained how that number was arrived at., without having access to my spreadsheet from here it appears that she took the total of DEEDs doable at 50 from the deed log from that zone, and the points they awarded, and left out TP from reputation and racial/class deeds entirely.

(note: as it is still beta, numbers and pretty much everything listed is subject to change)

For when I was testing my hobbit burg, the points available were as follows:

Bree Deeds: 200 Points (not including Haudh Iarchith Deeds)
    Ered Luin Deeds: 130 Points
    The Shire Deeds: 150 Points
Lvl 20 gift box quests: 20 Points
Men of Bree Rep: 50 Points (with rep trade-items/repeatables)
Racial Deeds: 35 Points (with deeds through L25)
Mathom Rep: 5 (I can't remember if Friend is possible with Gift Mathoms.note: if Friend is possible that will be 10 more. I just can't remember off the top of my head if I made friend before Level 30)

Below Level 25, I was able to get 590 points from these sources. I'm not sure whether the Haudh Iarchith deeds have been lowered yet, but these should bump the totals over 600 with room to spare once they are level appropriate. Also, you currently get 5 TPs for the Basic Class Traits, so those pushed me over the 600 points needed for Lone Lands. With Lone Lands purchased, you can gain the points from those deeds as well as Eglain Rep.

After 25, the following points were available to earn (outside of Basic Class Traits) through Level 40 without purchasing game packs:

Level 29 - 2 more racial deeds opened for 15 points total
Level 30 - 40 points from gift box quests
Level 30 - Mathom and Well-Kept Mathoms quests and turn-ins available (45 more points)
Level 30 - Tomb-Raiders' Sashes for Wardens of Annuminas quest and turn-in available (Up to 50 points depending on how determined you are)
Level 30 - Signets of Rhudaur for Elves of Rivendell quest and turn in vailable (see note on Warden's rep)
Level 33 (I believe) - Orc Battle-Medallions for Esteldin Rangers quest and turn-in available (see note for Wardens rep)
Level 35 - 2 more racial deeds opened for 25 points total
Level 39 - 3 Legendary deeds opened for 30 points total
Level 40 - 40 points from gift box quests

I'm sure I missed some, but that can give an idea on what is available to earn at different levels. Again, everything you read is of course subject to change.

Re: The Gathering of F2P Beta Testers

HI deeds haven't been touched yet. I'm under the impression it'll happen.
    -
Mathom Rep: 5 (I can't remember if Friend is possible with Gift Mathoms)
    --
I suspect that might have been where I got the other 10TP. Doing difficult Oatbarton quests. They were Shire quests at the time and thus free (They are no longer). It is more than made up for with the lowered-bree turn ins, and by that point you should probably have at least a few class deeds done. I did it with a few class/racial deeds, and looked at the reputation as a way to offset some of the longer class deeds (also because of the daily cap on advancing them.)

I would strongly suggest not posting on this thread about it as it will get lost when people are talking about the upcoming changes to the game. Start another thread.

From there, I would log into myaccount.turbine.com and make sure that you have a valid, paid for subscription that is active. That's the first stop.

If it's not giving you the actual log in screen, then you meed to make sure you've fully downloaded the game (all 10+ gigs of it), and installed it. Then look in your games folder, click the icon, and let it finish updating. It should then give you the login screen.

Make sure you've downloaded the current game client as well, and not the bullroarer test client. They are completely separate.

Aye, unless a quest has a reputation chunk as a reward, then you must hand in gift mathoms and get to aquaintance before you can get inside Mathom House and hand in mathoms/well kept mathoms.

Also, mathoms/wellkept drop in from the goblins/orcs in Dol Dinen as well.

Yes, you have to do gift mathoms to reach acquaintance, but this is not difficult to do from the shire quests.

Re: The Gathering of F2P Beta Testers

Some of these posts confuse me.

The goal isn’t to make F2P everything that Subscription based play is, if that were the case, Turbine would be out of business.

Everyone does realize that Turbine is in business to make a profit.... don’t you?

Im not putting them down, not at all, but speaking frankly.

Trying to get every quest pack, from in game play on a F2P account should be tremendously difficult, requiring the most heavy grinding of deeds. In fact I am impressed that Turbine is even looking at making that possible.

I would not in their shoes.

I am not running down F2P folks at all, not in any way whatsoever, welcome to the world we love and I will assist you as I can and treat you no different, and with the same respect that I treat anyone else.

Most of us accept this as reasonable, but would love to see Premium, as almost equally viable, especially in these economic times.

Some of these posts confuse me.
I'll be happy to try and clarify anything specific you point out, or answer questions from anyone in the community at large. I'd intended to write out some lengthy impressions over my time in beta, but things keep coming up. They will be at this thread eventually, and hopefully you'll find other F2P testers coming over to join us for tales of awe and amazement at the beautiful landscape, wonderful story line, and friendly community. Tales of ups and downs in the beta, and hopes and plans for post-launch day.

Yes quest packs are account wide, and so earning them is difficult. The first and cheapest one requires a significant investment on one character, or a lesser one on multiples. By that point most people will choose to put up a little money to buy the next region, look at subscribing, or move on to either a new game, or another character. Subscribing even for a short period of time such as 1 month has some very major benefits which may tempt players to then maintain their subscription. Subscriptions are really the most cost effective way to go for anyone who wants to run more than one character a time, without either a significant overlay over time (For trait slots/riding).

Since players have to purchase the riding skill on a per character basis (295TP Base) if they haven't learned it to learn it if they are not currently in a subscribed state, even this meager purchase of riding will make it neigh impossible, short of skirmishing your way, running GB repeatedly, or slaying mobs to level up so you can get and turn in reputation items and quests, and go further in the epic book, past 25 or so.

Welcome to the world we love and I will assist you as I can and treat you no different, and with the same respect that I treat anyone else.
Thank you, I hope you remain an example of what the community will be like when we greet you on launch day. There are bad-apples in every bunch, but lets strive to make them so few and far between that we hardly notice their presence.

    Thank you

I just think some folks are confusing "Free to play" with

"Turbine has become not only a non-profit organization but a philanthropic one and now everything they have built, and will build in the future is free to everyone"

Why does this surprise so many people? The only time I've heard of games letting you keep your work in a bug ridden beta is when it's the first open beta. Never for a beta 3 years after launch. I'm still surprised that this isn't obvious.

This isn't the real game, this is a test. This is not a "let's get a head start on the people who weren't lucky enough to get a key" game. This is being run in parallel with the real game, and people have actual copies of characters here who are also in the real game. When you have copies of characters, you absolutely can not copy them back again because it would be too easy to exploit the game (ie, double your money). There are bugs in the game that give unfair advantages.

There just is no easy way to let anyone keep their characters and be fair to other players, not even for new players.

    validating my lotro beta account

I just wanted to ask how i actually play the game. I downloaded a whole new client which on account of my terribled internets, took like 6 hours. I had to update. Then finally i pressed enter and it says:

    Game Error [201]
Can't open data files. Check that they exist and that you have permission to write them. The program will now exit. [201]

I don't understand because i'm pretty sure that I DO have permission to "write" them. and i'm positive they exist.

I tried to look online and it says there are certain times from 10 am to 10 pm or something that they validate my account. Please Help!

It's not so hard to get to level 16 again. You may make some different choices for your new character this time. Hope you have fun!

A couple of things to be aware of:

First, the download is going to be closer to 10.5 gigs, and with their downloaders expect it to take several hours. Having it start the download overnight while you're sleeping is not a bad thing.

Second, Lotro is NOT F2P yet. They haven't announced a day that it will be, though it is coming soon- likely in the next 4 weeks or so. They've also stopped the free trials, so right now as a new players you're kind of stuck in limbo until they do launch the f2p as it won't let in players without an active subscription.

Actually we announced the date about 3:30AM (someone owes me coffee!!!) this morning. September 10th!

Downloading and installing the live client now, in preparation for the launch, would be a smart move. Make sure you let it patch completely, then all you'll need to do on launch day is let it patch up to the F2P version and you can jump right in!

See, that's what happens when I post before I get caught up on my morning reading. You go and make an announcement. Thanks for the correction Sapience.

Ok, so there's the word for you. You can download, install, and patch, but won't be able to actually play until Sept. 10th. But after playing since shortly after it launched around 3 years ago, it's well worth waiting for.

Once you do level 16 once, you can get back to 16 really quickly- couple of good gaming sessions (maybe 10 hours total, tops).

That's a drip in the bucket to the hundreds of hours of content.

    Cheerss,

All betas are like that. I leveled a death knight from 55 to 80 in Warcraft beta.
Then did it all again in live. And I hate leveling. But at least you know where to go first hand in live.
Betas are just one huge test.

I was getting errors when trying to create an account. After I nosed around I found that sometimes credit cards were to blame. Depended on your provider any given day.
Try another card, try a game card. Also call the cc co and see if they have you blocked for online "virtual " items. If all fails, call cust support and they'll get you going.
Mine worked once I used my visa and not discover.
And again, it might just be the time of the day. I'm sure this company is busy getting ready to roll out the new f2p gaming.
Im going to enjoy the store. I did in beta. Prob buy the 30 day horse whistle soon as I can. Think it was level 5. Shows ya where my priorities are.
