Simple answer:
There's a "Que"

You stand in line and wait your turn.

This prevents the servers from crashing.

This "Que" also happens when your logging into the server, thus prevents the server from crashing.

They implemented this way back in beta.

Yeah, same, it's quite frustrating. Hopefully the patching itself begins soon and goes quickly. I'd rather wait for the servers to come up than for patching to begin.

It is always the same thing i.e new expansion (or migration) + millions of people trying to download = over loaded servers = stuck pc's

Be patient we all will get there, i'm sure

Servers are not currently availalbe to players. However you may be able to patch your client. Though you should be aware that due to a large volume of players trying to patch all at once, you may encounter log wait times during the "examine" phase. If you are seeing this, we encourage you to close your launcher and try again in a few minutes. If you leave your launcher in this state it may time out and hang.

Can you give us a rough estimate of when the servers might be up? If you can't use numbers can you give us an ETA in "really soon", "soon", or "quite soon"?

Same, was stuck on examine programs, but restarted on Sapience's recommendation and am now getting connection errors.

Well, I think the patch server has cracked under pressure as now I can't even get past the "connect" phase on both the launcher on this machine and the laptop that's next to it.
