That reminded me of the old tape drives we used to have to load programs from. Sat there for half an hour listening to beeps and buzzes then ten seconds from the end of the load, a cosmic ray shower (or something) hit it and you'd have to start again from scratch...hilarious...not.

I'm old enough to remember that. The worst part was when you died and had to reload all over again. 20 minutes to load, dead in 2, reload.

Well it looks like I'm going to pin the connection issues on Akamai, tbh. Despite netstat, ping and traceroute glory, also still waiting for a turn at the patching wheel...

I left the lotro starter open. When i arrived home it had crashed. I've restarted it a few times. It keeps saying "An updated error occurred: A connection attempt failed." Should i wait or should i keep trying to restart the program?

Aye indeed, we updated this way first time when f2p was released. So idd i meant like Mirkwood and before
Wasn't aware it was only Europe that could do it like this. Still it works great and they can make use of anyones computer by downloading p2p i.e.(though i think in a way they do that now aswell). But stillgiven torrents and use of i.e. gamershell servers aswell worked great and very fast.

still cant connect... 5 hours and counting... I just hope that the speed someone talked a while back compensates this waiting...

Dreamer...no way anyone is playing today....preparing the expansion for months and not having capacities to handle the patch requests on P-day.....with some breaks trying to only "connect" for over 8 hours to no avail - that´s pathetic

nvm - out now watching some football and checking tomorrow if it´s possible to patch

We should derail this thread to discuss his UI skin and then blame Sapience.

Anyways, it looks like I'm patching for a second time, which is bizarre, but it's still blazing fast. 62% now.

At the risk of stating the obvious - seeing a show we all know that the gane servers aren't up, wouldn't it be fair to everyone in the queue to log off once the patch is complete so as to free up space?

Right - EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE, who isnt VIP please close down your clients to allow the VIPs to patch first. I dont want to hear whines of 'that isnt fair', 'pay to download first' or any other gripes, just do it now.

Sapience, please take note of above and make the necessary adjustments your end - theres a good chap.

I remember the days where patching a full mmog expansion over the net was simply unthinkable... you had to buy your cd - which was often for sale the same day as release, not before, hence you had to camp your game store or wait for your mail order to arrive, which on the route from USA to Europe often meant you were able to play one week after live...

    I don't miss that, tbh :P

I follow the forums pretty regularly, but I totally missed this one. Why are we patching today when RoI comes out tomorrow? Sorry if this is repeat but no way I can sift through 24 pages of posts in this thread.

I used to play games that came on 5 1/4" floppies. One game could be dozens of floppies, and sometimes you had to load 6 or 8 of them in sequence, just starting the game took hours.

Foremost, as it was originally announced for release the 27th, I see today as 'bonus-early' -- if I actually get to patch and play today, it'll feel like a gift. (For a real gift, bring back the lottery. *g*)

That said, add my Win boxes to the list of ''A connection attempt failed'' every 60 seconds, plus client restart every 10-20 mins ... for hours ... with no love.

Hopefully in the launch post-mortem, Turbine will get the hint that purchasing a LOT of extra bandwidth on launch day would have greatly decreased customer dissatisfaction. While I can't imagine many (if any) people are going to /ragequit over not being able to play a day earlier than first expected ... I CAN imagine the grudge carrying on to reduce LOTRO Store sales.

it was before mirkwood, Turbine used to put out a patch file the day/night prior to any launch they did. Seemed to save alot of the trouble with whats going on now.
