    *waits*

Ironically have a system patched but the game is running at an insane crawl on it.

And yes while I can copy the files to the better system... i would still have to get past the patch server to be able to log in anyway.

Free players can now enter the Ettenmoors! Free and premium players gain access to the Reaver monster class for free! Please note: the Ettenmoors does have a maximum population cap and entry is on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Most MMOs do this. When you first launch the launcher it checks to verify that it is fully patched and the correct version. This requires a quick check of the patch server to do a version check.

Actually the official launch date remains September 27. Today is a bonus. The team worked very hard to get things into shape and ready so that the game would be available a day early.

Yes, there are things Turbine could have done that would have (slightly) improved the patching experience. They could have purchased the hardware upgrades for the patch servers that would have allowed more concurrent connections. That's a non-trivial exercise....adding something like that into your platform is a pretty weighty project; anybody thinking it's a matter of buying the device, plugiing it in, hokking it up, and rocking, is woefully misinformed.

Should they have done that? That's a business decision, comparing the cost of the hardware and the project time against the risk of having customers wait an additional few hours to patch. The patch issue occurs only...what, every expansion, so every year or so? More if there's a major, highly-anticipated patch between expansions?

You might not care for the business decsion that was made, and that's fair and all, but I'm not going to fault them for putting THAT money into servers that see use that seldom. The few extra hours saved patching once a year or so isn't worth it, and I'd consider any company that paid that expense to be a little irresponsible with their resources.
If only some technology could be developed to spin up servers on demand that could then be discarded when no longer needed, at a much lower cost than purchasing physical servers.

That is correct. The login server doesn't know about subscription status until you've given it your username and password.

We are all equal when it comes to patching.

I suppose a queueing system could be added for the patching process, but then those queue servers would probably just get overloaded, too.

If got a Question to those who patched it "first" (early morning us/lunchtime eu). Did anyone of you get in? If not could the Turbine-Staff please check if they forgot to switch anything for those who get automatically the connect error, because they already patched?

In other words: Did only those get on the servers so far, who have patched it after it got live, or who patched while it got live?

    Finally: Gratz to 75+ (Thread)

I think you hit the nail here. I think queing on logins does not differentiate between accounts we connecting to. Until you get to real login windows where you type your password.

That explains why even VIP's stuck in que even when patched.

and they didnt care to bring along enough servers on patch day ?

even if there where providing more servers as where really used in the end ...
wouldnt it be more professionel and service-like to provide them anyway,
    to be prepared ...

but no, we just start it a day earlier so nobody can blame as for only
providing half the capacity that we know is needed to get all customers patched at date

and before you squize your brains to come up with something to defend Warner, in this case

what are we talking about here? ... helping some major world scale company to just save
    a few bucks on us ... ?

i am not upset or something ... its just pathetic to 'watch'

I just love this kind of fallacy, trying to make excuses for something by pointing at something worse, as if that somehow nullifies the negative of the first thing.

    YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG!!!

Why are you repeatedly adding more and more servers? You should have added half or 90% of available servers to the patch pool ASAP after taking the worlds down, not adding them one at a time several hours after the problem surfaces!

This is the point in time to start to move the servers back into the normal pool, assuming that you had done it intelligently in the first place! (as in 90% of people online had been patched by now)

One would have expected that you learned something from the epic fail that you called the european migration.

I really hope you will try to prepare for the next patch, instead of this mess. One hint: you could let people download the patch data one full month in advance... the updated data one week in advance, and any last minute changes when the patch goes live, then the patch process should be very fast, instead of the gigabyte patch some people have been talking about.

Another hint: use one server for patch "login" and another for the real login, and let the launcher know and store whether it has been patched correctly, enabling it to bypass the patch server... if another patch has come live after, just let the login server check the version number and instruct the launcher to go back to the patch server. It aint rocket science!

In theory, they could farm out enough servers at enough separate sites to handle such a load- but to do that would take a huge amount of resources, enough to push RoI release until November or so....

Of course, I say that having been with my red X for about 5 hours now- but I've managed to get all the new loading screens loaded in English, German and French. Priorities, you know..

Thanks ever so much, Sapience. It's good to know you (and the IT folks at Turbine) are on top of this - that the problem is understood - and that you are doing what you can to address it. It really does make it easier to be patient.

Having some trouble connecting at all, but I'll sit tight and do some things elsewhere for the time being.

Personally, I'm not feeling particularly upset: I didn't plan to do anything in the new areas (my main is only level 55 at the moment- almost ready to go to Lorien!) for a few weeks yet. I'm hoping I'm able to patch by tonight, though.

Great job, Turbine. Keep up the good work, I'll just be patiently waiting over here.

Ok turbine, you really need to add a feature that shows the number of times a connection attempt was made. That way we would be able to gague our frustrations. "Well I have tried connecting 97 time...." "Dont feel bad, Im on attempt number 322" Then we could all rage when the guy that attemps 7 times gets right in.

They call you ahead of time and say "actually it looks like your vehicle will be here ready for pickup on the 26th". That's awesome! I mean you could have continued driving your old vehicle (pre-ROI LOTRO) for another day but you're happy to get into the vehicle a day early. Once you get to the dealership they come up to you and say "we're sorry but the car got here this morning and in doing our check up on the car's systems we discovered that the car won't even start. Please sit tight while we work to figure out what's wrong with your car." Meanwhile you already adjusted your schedule to pick up the car on the 26th even though its not ready.

This kind of service is unacceptable and just because the game was supposed to be ready on the 27th and now is available on the 26th really doesn't mean anything if you can't get on and play.
To be fair i think i'd rather wait for the car to start.
