My guess is Morgoth's crown; it was made of iron, and had the three Silmarils (shining stars) mounted in it.

I think that the three houses of stone might be the cities (houses) of those among the elves who lusted after the Silmarils. (Gondolin, Menegroth, and one other that I can't remember.)

The answer is correct, even if the third line's guess wasn't. The three houses of stone are the three-fold peaks of Thangorodrim. Nevertheless, the correct answer is Morgoth's Crown.

To be nice, here's the explanation:
Lines 1&2 - refers to the seven "incarnations" of Durin. (Durin I - VII)
Line 3 - refers to the fact that Durin was called 'The Deathless', but eventually died.
Line 4 is there to keep rhythm.

Lines 5&6 - The first Durin lived in the First Age, while the last (Durin VII) lived in the Fourth Age.
Lines 7&8 - Moria, where each Durin held their court, is roughly in the middle of the map; it's not in the Northlands (Angmar, Forochel, Evendim, etc), the East (Mordor, Rhun, Harad, etc.), the West (Valinor) or the South (Gondor.)

Lines 9&10 - Under Durin (IV?), the Angerthas Moria were created.
Lines 11&12 - The Crown of Durin in the Mirrormere

Line 13 - Refers to the bending of the world, when Valinor was cut off from the rest of Middle Earth after the downfall of Numenor.
Line 14 - Refers to the wars between the North-kingdom and Angmar in which both nations were ruined.
Line 15 - Refers to the two defeats of Mordor.
Line 16 - Refers to the kingdom of Men which remained long after Durin's Folk had vanished from Middle Earth.

Yes, I'm sure. I've never heard of the latter two, but my changing of 'reign' to 'rain' was purposeful. I felt like being confusing. The original line I had there was 'under my ivy', but I was unsure on whether or not the Angerthas Moria were established under Durin IV.
