Some quick thoughts on the GLFF

Hello people of Meneldor Quinn here.
I joined this server over 8 months ago during ROI and overall it has been a pleasant experience. My old server Windfola was starting to get stale most of the kins I was in were disbanding and there were alot of hard feelings going around.

It's not really a problem but a concern, but the amount of chat trolls in the glff in this server is reaching an all time high since ROR hit. On my old server we very few chat trolls in our glff. Actually on my old server I had 1 person on my ignore list. Since I have had to move here the number of people on my ignore list is approaching 30. I'm not really sure that these certain individuals even realize what they are doing can be annoying for those trying to find a skraid or a group. It is not just limited to actual trolling. Some of the things I have seen recently are:

    1. People using the glff as a kin chat

It's only mildly annoying but I'm pretty sure I do not need to know every single time someone from your kin give you something or performs well in a raid.

    2. People using the glff as a personal whisper channel

Judging by the number of people using the servers glff channel as a personal im channel I can only surmise, that there are a lot of people out there that are either looking for attention or they want every single person on the server to know what they are doing and that they know everything.

    3. People who give a smart &&& answer to every single question asked in the glff

I'm not sure what is going on in today's society. Maybe I'm just out of touch with the younger players. When did they start awarding pride badges for trolling? Is it a self esteem issue? Way too many keyboard tough guys out there apparently.

    4. Gear linkers

3 years ago when I played WOW this was a major problem. (we used trade chat to form groups, due to lack of a group forming channel) On my last server I never saw any gear linking unless someone asked to have the gear linked. Seriously must we know everytime you get symbol, crest, piece of gear etc. I do not see what this accomplishes.

Things that I do not have a problem with is trade and such going on in the glff. Since we all know the trade channel never gets used.

Normally I would not even post a thread like this, I like the players in the server for the most part. And knowing that the server has probably 30 times the trolls my last one did, I pretty much expect this thread to get trolled. I think some will see my reason and agree with me. I think there should be some sense of responsibility when you use the global chat channels and forums. Just to recap there are no gold stars given out for the best trolls, /k is for kin chat, /tell is for pm, and pretty much no cares when you get a crest, symbol, etc.

He's got a Point. This is Meneldor Glff you just adapt to it, most of us have private channels but glff tends to be the big social channel. Honestly if it's an issue /joinchannel [>Insert Name Here<] [>Insert password here<] then you and your friends dont have to deal with the social time of glff. As for ppl trolling thats just glff nature. If you pay close attention someone always gives you the answer you are looking for amongst all the Trolls. I know yesterday i did my good Glff deed for the day. and the asker completely missed the post. Not my fault they are expecting answers from trolling.

With that said. hit up the /ooc /advice channel suprisingly those channels are semi used

welcome to the internet, nice to meet you, can i get a list of all of your characters? this will help me and others like me who might otherwise use glff in a manner of our choosing for our own entertainment, i am deeply sorry that you are of the sensitive nature where the current meneldor GLFF community has driven you to these extremes, in the future i will do my part of handling you with kid gloves

Quite frankly I don't really care. It is a public, server wide, user created channel.

I personally link gear almost everytime something new or unique pops up in one of our raids. It is not expressly to brag about it but rather to show the majority of players what they can work towards in a Raid or Instance. Public knowledge of good itemization = more group being formed, more desire to run content, and more communication.

GLFF = Global Looking For Fellowship.

    fel·low·ship
    /ˈfelōˌSHip/
    Noun

Friendly association, esp. with people who share one's interests.
A group of people meeting to pursue a shared interest or aim.

    Synonyms
    companionship - friendship - comradeship - association

Although I do see your point, I respectfully disagree. GLFF is where a lot of people hang out, chat with friends, discuss both game topics, and not so game related topics ...things like bacon (always important), blowing up Marshmallow Peeps in the microwave (if you've never done this, you must, the go POOF and get real big and it's like the best thing ever!) and creepy pickup lines. It's how a great number of people on this server interact.

Yes, there is some jerkiness. That *is* what the ignore button is for. Heck, I ignored 4 people the other night, and I like almost everyone. Yes, there is some blatant silliness, but last I checked, we were playing a game. Oh, and I do care when a friend gets a new item that hasn't been seen before, I like to congratulate people when they do well. People who link stuff over and over drive me nuts, but I just put my big girl panties on and generally suck it up.

From your post, I would strongly suspect that I'm one of the people that drive you nuts. I will not apologize for being myself, I am not out for attention, I just truly love people and I'm very chatty. I live life with a general 'a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet' theory, and being randomly chatty in glff has lead to some amazing in game friendships. With that being said, why don't you make an effort to get to know some of the people that you obviously aren't relating to (err...not the trolls, don't feed them). I'm pretty approachable as a human being - yes, occasionally sarcastic, but overall, I'm pretty nice. Ao, say hi to people, and maybe take a step towards looking at the people of GLFF in a new light.

    It's just a thought.

Use that ignore button liberally - glff can introduce you to some new players you haven't met/grouped with and it can also clue you into the ones you wouldn't care to just as well. If you're looking for a mature player base or glff chat, Landroval is a good place to start. After returning here, it took serious adjusting and liberal ./ignore to get to where I could tolerate it again.

That said, there are some great people on Meneldor and many who don't use it to flirt, epeen and troll. Hurth is right about the linking, especially after instances are released. My personal pet peeve is the annoying and constant chatter from the same people and their 20 alts who really should just create their own friends chat. We created a private user channel for friends who are spread across different kins on Landroval - its easy to create and maintain and add new people you meet. Why more people don't do this is beyond me - they would probably make more friends by not being in everyone's faces 24/7.

But yeah, unfortunately you aren't going to get much resolved by your post here. The people attracted to post in glff like the exposure and based on the amount of trolling behavior, will do anything to get attention.

PS: Welcome to Meneldor! Hopefully you will find the rest of the server to your liking - there are some really fun people here.

(sits back and waits for the troll comments from people already on ignore :-P)

    Tough Love

Hey, I'm sorry that you think your old world's GLFF channel is better, but let's face it...you dont go to a new country and tell everyone to speek english because you don't understand them, you must adapt and learn thier language.

I have had my fair share of trolling and I have also done my fair share.

If you don't think that you can adapt then there is always the /leavechannel choice or do what I do (cause frankly, we all have our days)...

If u right click on your general tab in the chat box, you get the option to make a new tag, what I have done (definitally not alone), is create a specific tab where I see only GLFF so if I actually care what people in GLFF are saying, I flip to that tab and look at it...

Personally, I find this wonderful for my self however if this is not to your liking, I have one more suggestion:

Change the color of all your other chat chanels (OOC, LFF, KIN, FELLOW) and make then all bright standout colors while leaving GLFF white...I found that this made everything else stand out more and that way I only saw GLFF is a gave a flying **** what the trolls were saying....

Good Luck and welcome to Meneldor

glff annoys the hell out of me. Having to see inane chatter and foul language puts me off. Glad I'm in an awesome kinship and rarely need to turn it on. I've been on this server for 5 years so I suppose my opinion counts more? Nope. Glff is painful period.

We need a Glff2 that we all use as a twitter.

That way GLFF is for all the above and then tweet on Glff2 about noobs in the moors, etc.

    =D (hugs Meneldor)

You should feel lucky you're not in Brandywine's GLFF. Put GLFF on another tab can help a bit.
