Does anyone have any idea as to what % of LOTRO Players are Female?

A 2011 study showed that females made up 47% of the gamers, up from 42% in 2010. females are (according to a bunch of studies) the fastest growing segment of the market and, apparently, the growth is in online, social games such as Second Life and Fantasy RPGs (although not ones with gloomy depressing scenery)

Other studies show they gravitate to games like The Sims, or games where they can build/make things.

Apparently, in 2013, the percentage of females playing MMORPGs is approaching 50% in total.

Do people fell like its true in LOTRO?

Maybe Sapience might share some rough ideas with us.

BTW, my grand daughter asked me (she is now playing LOTRO).

Without going into details or specifics, yes LOTRO has a higher than average female demographic. We tend to skew both older and attract more female players than the industry averages.

For what its worth (she is 10 years old):

She loves the game and the scenery

Loves the quests

Wishes that there were a few more quests that offered things to fill out her wardrobe (clothes, jewelry, all cosmetic stuff .. including belts. Also would like some accessories like scarves, flowers in hair.)

Wishes there was a greater set of options for hair style and thinks the color ranges are poor.

I'm sure its not on the top 100 list but its feed back.

edit - Did she get playing in time to enjoy the Spring Festival? That had some really nice cosmetics, including a flower headpiece (which my male elves also wear) and a very nice gown.

She had a blast in the festival. But now we need to get some of her friends online and a quick run through with her friends had it appealing to the girls but only a couple of the boys. Some of the boys lost interest when there wasn't a high score LOL!

its funny the types of games the girls like versus the boys. For example, she loves the old game spore. I wish they would come out with a new version. She loves the Sims, she loves minecraft...

We have no valid numbers available to us on the number of players (as you have stated multiple times Sapience) so no Savin, nobody has anything to contribute to this question.

-Not even Sapience, who for whatever reason chose to reply to this thread giving you a "Yeah we totes have more chicks than other games!" which you can choose to believe or not. Sapience cannot give us numbers and we will not be able to produce any that are valid.

I doubt Turbine even has the info necessarily.

I don't see [Male/Female] offered as a survey question when I see most surveys in terms of demographics.

They certainly can tell how many male/vs/female characters we have, but that's not necessarily an indication of anything.

From this US Census Bureau Report we can extrapolate that, all things being equal, the likely female population is around 50.8% of the USA player population. Furthermore, we can extrapolate from The World Bank, Population, female (% of total) the female population would be generally around 50% with variances for culture, religious beliefs and national policies.

You failed to read (or, perhaps, to understand) the initial post, where the question posed is not, does LOTRO have more female players, but do players think that it does. That's certainly something players can answer.

Yes, I feel as if this community has a larger proportion of female players as well as, on average, a more mature player-base.

What gives with the hostile and borderline sexist responses in this thread? Are some players really that threatened by the notion that they may be playing a "girls' game"? C'mon – it's 2013. There are other games out there if you feel you need to be playing in a totally testosterone-fueled sausage-fest.

I am also, btw, primarily a raider. I craft, love the questing, have a full wardrobe and decorate my in-game house periodically, but what keeps me playing is instances and raids. And the store manager? She is a pvper and raider. The lawyer does a bit of everything and is a bit of an altaholic

Especially by a woman who plays with her grand-daughter.

I play with my Husband .. it was His idea.
I also manage the crafting so that he can be the "Best" in his version of LOTROs "testosterone-fueled sausage-fest" Quests-with-a-Storyline that he wants to be (I am still cleaning my screen on that one, Aestivan - I will send you a bill - hahahahah) .

I also give Sapience credit for getting back to the OP so quickly with a positive responce.

So .. Yes - I perceive that there are more women playing LOTRO, then men .. at least I believe there are more Characters controled by women then men.

Hmm, I play on Brandy and while I certainly agree in my large kin, the number of actual male players does outweigh the number of female players, I find the female players tend to stick with the game longer, while the males (not all obviously) tend to come visit for a while then leave...that said, I believe at least half of our officers are female irl, with a great degree of age range, roughly 40 yrs or so between youngest female officer and oldest female officer. We are here, and we do play, and it's not just LOTRO! In my previous MMO, DAoC, last played about 6 yrs ago, I actually started an all female kin, just to try and show the boys that we could play as well, and have as much fun as they did! Sadly, we all loved our regulars guilds (kins) too much to really ,make a go of it at that time...

FYI, I fit both demographics Sapience mentioned, being both female and a MMO player for over ten years, approaching age 60.
