World Transfers

I will state this again. There WILL be free transfer opportunities for players on the remaining worlds post consolidations once players have a chance to evaluate communities. My stance on that has never changed. However due to technical limitations we can not do that via one token for every character, nor can we do one account wide token.

"Weekends" was a bad term to use. Lets say Free transfer "events" which will be determined when we set them up post consolidations they could be a week or a month, depending on what is appropriate and will be communicated via emails, forums and game announcements. If you don't want to wait for one of these windows to open to leave a world you are unhappy with, we will be providing the 3 tokens to move your primary characters to a place you would rather be in the meantime.

Our first priority however is getting the worlds onto the new hardware and consolidated down to the remaining 10. It is a great disruption for the entire community and we are all looking forward to being on the other side. Once there we will be better able to survey the state of the worlds and then decide the next reasonable time and set of worlds to open for free transfers.

Currently BW and Evernight are the major servers, if player population ratios stay similar, will these two servers stay as exit only during free xfer events, or are there plans to allow people to move onto these servers for free at least once after closing server migrations are done?

Please, please seriously consider creating a read-only stickied thread where you can post the latest info on the transfer effort and answer questions you have seen come up on the forums. We need a place were people can read YOUR words, unfiltered by those who want to be seen as helpful but who can't help but add in their own interpretations to your words.

After all the info you posted here yesterday, things have changed a lot since your first letters about the transfers. A central thread with blue-name only info, read-only, kept up to date, would help everyone immensely.

I can't possibly agree with this enough. I read the forums often so have kept more or less up to date, but it would be very helpful to have an official, frequently updated thread from Turbine that we can share with kinnies and others who have questions about the transfer process.

I think the bigger problem here is that the token system as it has been implemented now (actually since 2014) is not programmed to be "per character". You purchase tokens from a website when you are logged on to your account. The 3 tokens you get, you can use for the same character, three times, moving to different servers, or for 3 different characters, etc.... In other words, at this moment it isn't possible to "bind" a transfer token to ONE character.

And getting that programmed might be a technical challenge that they aren't prepared for at the moment, and certainly won't be able to fix before the transfers are needed. So they probably didn't have a choice, and opted for the regular, already existing account tokens.

Yes. All of the 10 remaining servers will have an opportunity for people to move off of them or on to them for free at least once at some point over the course of these events, including Brandywine and Evernight, but AFTER the new hardware is online. I will come up with a schedule of events in the next few months. I expect these things to occur during the end of 2015 and the first part of 2016.

Excellent, I think this exactly what everyone has been looking for and thought we were getting until the communications yesterday made some of us question it, this seems like the more than fair move to make and give everyone a fair shake and ending up where they want to be.

Nimrodel's turn today. It turns out Arkenstone is VERY popular, and the known sites that provide login data have Arkenstone inching closer and closer to the logon levels of Gladden and Landroval. It surprised me!

No. There is no PHYSICAL move of servers. They are putting in NEW servers (the hardware is probably already racked in a datacenter in Amsterdam and pre-configured with hypervisors) on which they will build NEW virtual machines. These virtual machines will sync up with the existing servers in Boston (and they likely are already testing this), and at some point they will do a cutover. At that point they will replicate the last changes from Boston to Amsterdam, and then bring up the servers in Amsterdam.

There will not be a physical move, as in picking up a server in Boston, putting it on a boat, and unpacking a box in Amsterdam. It doesn't work like that, you may be thinking of the 1990s. It's all virtualized nowadays, new hardware will be installed, and all that is "moved" is actual data, over the internet, from the old hardware in Boston, to the new hardware in Amsterdam.

The exact same process will happen with the US servers, who are moving from Boston to somewhere in New Jersey. No one is driving over physical hardware on "moving day", the snapshots of virtual servers will just be updated, synced, and replicated to the new datacenter.

You also need to understand that a "server" is not a "single computer with lots of cpus and ram". It is instead a cluster of virtual machines, all playing a vital role in what is known as a "server". A lotro "server" could contain dozens of these virtual machines, some may be shared among servers, some are exclusive to that server, etc.... the complete architecture is not know, but I do know that there are no "physical" servers when it comes to lotro. There is physical hardware of course with loads of cpu and memory, but they just contain hypervisors to host many many more virtual servers.

AFAIK it has always been the plan for the EU servers to be set up on the new hardware in the new location, and that hasn't changed (or at least nothing has been announced regarding any change).

Servers are back up.

However, Nimrodel is not listed yet for transfer. Since I do have a level 5 character on that server.... I can only assume that transfers off of Nimrodel have not yet been made active.

Well it's letting me on game, I go in to transfer, it's takes a min or more to even pull up the select server screen and then Nimrodel isn't even there. Every other world that has been transfer from is there but not Nim. What the hay.
