As you have noticed , in the last few months the Laurelin Archives has experienced performance and stability issues, this coincided with some unrelated changes to the hosting service we are currently using. Moving forward the Laurelin Archives Webteam have decided to undertake some mayor work on the site, and move the site to a more reliable host to prevent more problems in the future.
What does this mean ?
The Laurelin Archives has a huge database containing all your profiles, stories, and images. Transfer of this database needs to be done carefully in order to avoid problems. Our new host will help us in this process. Tests will be run before and after the permanent move to see how the site reacts. We will also make majoy updates on the site at the same time.
Will I be able to use the L.A. during the move ?
No. The Laurelin Archives will be offline for several days, to allow work to take place. Service will be distrupted but we will be keeping you informed of the progress on the LOTRO forums and via Twitter. The Laurelin Archives is an essential tool for the RP community of Laurelin, and with the new Mordor expansion on the horizon, it is vital for us to make improvements to allow the site to run smoothly in years to come.
When will the L.A. go down for maintenance ?
We will initiate the process on Monday 19th of June at 18:00 UTC, just over a week from now, so if you have any stories you want to share, the next few days are a good time to do it.
Where can I find news when the site goes down ?
We will keep you up-to-date here on the LOTRO forum , where we have a dedicated thread, or you can follow us on Twitter. Notification of the work in progress will also be displayed on the page during maintenance.
How will I survive without my daily Laurelin Archives fix *sobs quietly* ?
We understand having the site offline for sometime will create anxiety , so we will not say to you 'do not weep, for not all tears are evil ', but remember we are working to improve the site,so that we can all continue to enjoy the Archives for years to come.
We would like to Thank You in advance for your support and understanding while we work to remove all the cobwebs and dust from the Archives, and we look forward to reopening our doors soon.
Wishing you and the LA team all the best for the site transfer. I will miss having LA available, but the benefits far outweigh the slight inconvenience. Thank you all for what you are doing to provide us with a reliable site.
.
Yllfa of Rohan. Mistress of Lore, and Healer. Edoras.
Thanks for your support and taking time to write it here the team greatly appreciate it. There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes and I am sure Amorey will keep the community appraised of progress.
Work is underway on the transfer of the database. As we have said before this need to be done carefully and slowly to avoid problems and loss of data. So far we have not encountered too many problems, but we do not have any estimate on how long the site will be offline for, we prefer not to rush the process.
Here is the latest update on the status of the Archives : phase 1 of the update was completed successfully. The Laurelin Archives is now on a brand new server. We are now starting phase 2 of the work which includes a complete upgrade of the site's software.
Sounds like you are undertaking a mammoth task and one I don't envy you for. I am certain that there are some players practically frothing at the mouth because they can't post, but I for one am appreciative of the care and attention you are putting into the move. It is a free site for the user, one that you and the team devote your time to and I think a lot of people take that for granted. It is a fantastic creative base you have given to the players, I hope you aren't being pestered too much by the overly eager, good luck!

Thank-you FlanneryFireweed for taking time to post here, the feedback is greatly appreciated and welcome. Your words will be passed onto all the team.
The Laurelin Archives certainly has grown over the years and as most who use it can see there is a huge amount of data to be moved to its new home. There is a lot of communication behind the scenes going on with the team to ensure everything goes as planned and the Archives is restored to the community once more.

I haven't seen or heard anyone 'frothing at the mouth', though everyone is understandably eager for the site to be back on its feet. But that is simply a testament to how loved and valued and widely-used it is, and that's a massive compliment to Khalis, Amorey, and anyone else who's had a hand in its creation and running over the years. I would certainly hope that folks aren't taking it for granted and definitely that they aren't pestering the admins in a negative fashion. It's difficult when such a tool is offline, as it's used by so many for so many purposes, but I've only seen eager enthusiasm for its return, and I hope that's all that's been expressed to the admins.
I just wanted to thank you for the kind words, support and patience the community is showing while we work to upgrade the site. Here is a small update on how work is progressing: we are slowly upgrading every single module on the site, this need to be done carefully and cannot be rushed. Without getting too technical , we are upgrading the Laurelin Archives to the latest version of our software, this will improve security and stability. Moving forward we are also discussing some improvements on the look of the site, but this is something we will tackle after the Archives is back online. As before I cannot give you any estimate on how much time the upgrade will take, but we are making good progress which is very encouraging.
Please note the 'minimalist' look of the site you see in the screenshot is due to maintenance, once the site is back online it will look just like before
The Laurelin Archives is back online after undergoing maintenance.
Please read carefully the update notes and if you have an problems on the site get in in touch with us, we will be happy to help.
Kinshps Membership and Relationships :
While upgrading the Kinship module we have encountered an issue that prevented Kinships Members Lists from displaying correctly. This is due to the newer version of the software that made the previous version obsolete. We have tried to fix this, but Kin Member lists were still not displaying properly.
You will find the Kin Members lists empty as the site goes back online. To create a new list, please ask your members to fill the Kinship Link field on their profiles. This will recreate an up-to-date members list on the Kinship Profile.
New Kinship Link
Please note that this solution is only a placeholder, and that we are planning more work to improve this feature.
Text Fields:
This covers personal profiles, kinships profiles, events, Organizations and so on.
Text fields such a 'Love' Hate', 'Quote' and so on are now limited to 250 characters. Text fields such a 'Love' Hate' and 'Quotes' are there just to give a short description of the character's details. Profiles that previously had more than 250 characters in these fields will need to be reworked by the profile owner, we can provide the data that was cut out in the upgrade.
Please note that Adventure Text Fields are not affected .
Advertisements :
The Advertisements we had previously on the site will not be carried over with the upgrade. We are looking to reinstate a similar feature in the future, after the site is back online.
Welcome Back and Thank You for yuor patience and understanding.
I'd just like to take the opportunity to thank the Web-team of the Laurelin Archives for sustaining a web-page which is, in truth, often more fun than the game itself! (Or so I think!)
I've only recently discovered LotRO and I'm loving it so far, but being able to record the journey - in all respects - of my character on LA is fantastic! (Indeed, his entire development has been an holistic LA journey.)
I have no idea how many folk are on the team. but I'd like to say. "Kudos" to each and every one of them. Your response to even my slightest query has been swift and accurate.
Thanks for the very kind words Angollan, it is always nice for the team to get feedback and thanks from the community about the Archives. In answer to your question the team is made up of just three people Calenon, Amorey and myself (Khalis) with both myself and Amorey still very active in game.
We consider the site as a community project being the sum of all those like yourself, past and present who have contributed to the Archives over the many years it has been running. So it is only right that we say thank-you to all those who take time to contribute.
