Amazons New World Beta is currently being played by streamers. Not sure if its completely open yet. It may give some insight on some of the systems/graphics/tech the new Lotr MMO will use.

Over the years I've pretty much given up on new mmo's. I've tried so many, but none give me the same feeling as lotro does. It's a combination of graphics, setting and story that makes nothing compare to it. I just feel at home in this version of Middle-Earth. And it only takes me one trip through the shire or Bree-land to remind me of this, or a read through my quest log because I love the writing. I know what it's like to get excited for a new game, but personally I know I'll stick to lotro. If in a couple of years it seems promising I might give it a try, but I'm not getting my hopes up or look forward to it. I'm not looking for a replacement anymore, because why should I? I'm perfectly content with this game.
"The leaves were long, the grass was green, The hemlock-umbels tall and fair, And in the glade a light was seen Of stars in shadow shimmering.
Tinuviel was dancing there To music of a pipe unseen, And light of stars was in her hair, And in her raiment glimmering. [...]" ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Well I'm pretty much guaranteed to check it out, but I'm extremely picky about how I like games. Stealthy worldwide PVP enabled and I get killed? OK done with that game. Lenticle targeting? Done. Can't figure out how to fly (ahem, GW2)? -- well figured out, but it leads to continual nag messages? Done. Completely changes everything and becomes uber grindy at endgame? Well, I'll just play alts at lower levels.
They have a really high expectation level from me. I guess I"m getting old and sick of the usual annoyances in MMOs. The one new innovation I've liked lately is the Rift-like local events that anyone can join. Most MMO's have added something like that and I really enjoy those. The "local baddie appears" message is something I never ignore. Pretty sure Rift did it first, but could be wrong.
Regardless, I'm not likely to abandon LOTRO to play something else. Over the years there's been plenty of offers from many games and I've stayed. So I hope LOTRO's management isn't really worried. I don't think we're all going to leave.
As much as people complain about it, LOTRO broke new ground with mounted combat and huge epic battles with siege engines and armies. The Rohan music is still the most epic in any game. We're having a lot of fun here.

Great post Shirewhistle, captures a lot of what I feel too.
I wish the Amazon MMO the best, but based on Amazon's overall past track record with games, I'm not expecting a lot. LOTRO was was developed with a lot of passion for the world and lore of middle-earth. Do we really think that same passion and love of craft is going to come through in this product? Even if the new MMO does manage to surprise us all, my money would be on the two MMO's would compliment each other and actually end up help each other make more money than had their just been one MMO.
I am curious.
Finally we get some news: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/a-.../1100-6484816/
January 2021 - final decision about game concept
September 2022 - closed beta
January 2023 - open beta
End of 2024 - early 2025 - release date
For PS4 and Xbox One. Nothing about PS5 and X/S
I might try it out, but LOTRO is the one for me. They really nailed the LOTR atmosphere, I always feel like I'm actually in Middle Earth.
I honestly cannot see this new game capturing that feel.

Amazons record for game development is pretty bad. I wouldn't hold out much hope that this project will be any different.

It's been canceled. Guess the half billion they spent on the first season of middle-earth second age tv series was enough.

I'm sad to read this, but on the other hand it means that I won't have to divide my sparse playing time between two great games :-) (and before someone tells me of all the things that are not as they're supposed to be in Lotro: I know, I experience them myself, but nevertheless I consider it a great game).
There's some good in this world, and it is worth fighting for.
I predict that can happen. Lack of progress and almost 2 years spend with no result.

The industry of entertainment nowadays is very addicted. The most interest of them are power and money.
So I don't expect anything better than what we have in Lotro community.
As has been sayed have, this game is good because It was deposited a lot of passion and dedication on the Tolkien story.
