I heartily detest skill trees. I love the current system of class traits and its flexibility; I am not a fan of skill trees for the mounts.

I have played games that had trees. I have played games that don't. I don't see any particular difference in flexibility in the end (probably just me, there). There are limits either way. Some find trees more intuitive. Others don't. Mixing them I don't see as possible from the implementation point of view. Implementation details will, I think, matter greatly.
