As a female player, I would love to be able to play a dwarf. I know males like to play females but the reverse is rarely true. I assume that there can be females in lore and males dwarves don't spring from the ground.....

Dwarves play their gender pretty close to the chest. The females look too much like males for the other races to see a difference.
If you'll note, the other races say something like "elf (male)" at creation, the dwarves just say "dwarf". This is because they are of an unknown gender, the dwarf you are playing could be either male or female, really, it is just too hard to tell the difference.

Indeed as Speaksoftly said, Dwarves are actually both males and females. No one knows if they are female. (Female dwarves even have beards). There is common assumption that all Dwarves are men, or at least the ones we meet in travels. Given female dwarves never inform us of their gender. So you can safely play a feminine Dwarf, letting us know whether you are female Dwarf or not is the question for yourself and for us to figure out hehe![]()

The pen is mightier then the sword - but only if the sword is very short and the pen is very sharp.

From what I understand, only a small percentage of the dwarf race is female (think something like 1/3) which would make it very hard for the females to go out exploring.
I think that may be the reason why there aren't any official "sexes" for Dwarfs as it would have probably been against the Lore for them to be out adventuring. But by allowing players to name them female names and play them as females, they get around it.Originally Posted by LOTR: Appentices

Of course, by using that same appendice, it wouldn't make much sense for there to be female dwarves in the game at all. If they don't go to war and rarely even leave except for "direst need," then we shouldn't really be seeing them running around killing everything in sight, should we? Who knows, though? Maybe the female dwarf was raised by another race and so doesn't mind going to war? Or there could be a variety of other background stories that could be developed to explain a female dwarf in this game. Still, to really follow Lore, the number of female dwarves actually out questing and such should be only a very small percentage of the number of dwarves in the game.

My dwarf guardian, Sallyanne, is a Lady AND a dwarf-- she is a bit of a rebel.
As a child she had heard tales of the folks who go out on adventures, who hunt down the enemy and wander about seeing the world. It stirred her heart with a powerful longing to do the same. So, against her parents wishes, and to the dismay of her community, she set out on her great adventure.
And by the way, since dwarves are VERY secretive about their names, she took upon herself a name that struck her fancy... Sallyanne was the family cow! The name always made her smile.....
Hehe. Not sure that the name makes me smile, but your description certainly does!![]()

Actually, if you pay attention to the way NPC dwarves speak, some of their voices are higher in pitch and others are lower. I've always assumed the higher-pitched ones are the females.

My character Sylvi is a female Dwarf, proud daughter of the House of Blacklock.
She was ostracised by her family when she went against her parents' wishes and abandoned her Jewellers profession and began training as a Runekeeper, a strange and otherwordly practice, that was in their eyes, not to be trusted.
Despite this she still gives out her surname freely, which proclaims that she is the daughter of her father, Ingi

I will say this, it might be nice to give Dwarves the option of being clean shaven (shameful as that may be to a Dwarf...).

Lore-wise you're correct. Female dwarfs don't leave their homes unless they're under attack. It would make sense for some NPC's maybe like up in Thorin's Hall but not in the game world as toons.
Not that it's fair in terms of making a character, but lore-wise that's how it is.
I found in Moria a Female Dwarf Axe, I found a building their for Female Dwarves, Male Dwarves can tell the difference so the foundations for Female Dwarves by lotro are in place if they should in the future want to introduce Lady Dwarves openly. Males a square in built and Females are curvy,Think of it as a Short May West Figure with a thin beard type.
