I cropped out and enhanced the painting. Maybe this can help with identification.

Looks like an Elf to me, though he would be of the Vanyar since his hair seems to be blondish - he would be descended from Indis and Finwe in that case.

Perhaps it is intended to be Glorfindel?

There's one of those hanging on the wall in Bag End, as well. I've always wondered who it might be.

    heh...

    analysis to paralysis.

I love reading into this sort of stuff as much as the next guy. It's 1/2 the fun of playing this game...

..then the pragmatist in me takes over and says "Duh... it's just some sketch that a dev made in development for the sake of ambiance. Nothing more, nothing less".

I'll choose to believe that there was a ton of thought and research put into that itty-bitty piece of our LOTR online world, but I won't be at all surprised if it's actually just a scan of a drawing one of the devs' 13 year-old kid did in school one day.

In one of the first chapters of Book 1 (or possibly the human prologue, I'm not certain), the rangers use this map to plan their attack. Although it's far from appropriate for an attack plan, it's a hidden nugget for sure:

It's also upside down. Strider is looking at it on the ground in front of him, but the view in that screenshot is your view standing facing him. So the map is facing you when it should be facing him. Silliness.

Maybe he moonlights as a programmer; many of us had to develop the skill of reading program listings upside down when our bosses were reading our code across the desk from us.

I think the map is for the hero's benefit. I'm pretty sure Aragorn could make his way from Rivendell to the Endless Stair blindfolded.

A couple of the hidden nugget's I've found are in the quest titles themselves. For example, the title for Book 4 Chap. 2? is "Where is the Horse and the Rider." Although it was originally from the Lament for Gandalf, it is used to refer to the fact that you are looking for the ninth black rider. Another one I found was in Forochel, with a quest titled "Cold as Death." It's probably a reference to the fact that everything in Forochel is freezing, but the line is straight from Bilbo and Gollum's riddle-game: "Alive without breath, as cold as death, never thirsty, ever drinking, all in mail, never clinking." I also saw the title for the troll-killer deed in Sarnur is "Troll-kicker." That comes from Sam's quoting of the troll poem when he sees the three stone-trolls in Trollshaws.

Good eye, though a minor lapse in memory. The line "Where now the horse and the rider?" is from the song about Éorl the Young, father of the Éorlingas of Rohan.

Nay, it was Aragorn as He, Gandalf, Legolas, and Gimli passed through the mounds of the Kings at Edoras.

In the Two Towers movie, Théoden recites the song as Gamling is helping him with his armor.

I'm sure it's already been posted before, but I'm too lazy to read a billion pages to find out.

Sometimes in a quest you can read the notes you obtain. This has to be my favourite one. I love that whole story line, and going to see particular well named Hobbits in the Bird and Baby inn adds some nice icing on the cake!

    Thanks Bob:

This is my favorite quest in the entire game. When I found out about it, I went back to the Shire to complete it, even though I had long since made it to level 50. I had noticed the aptly named Inkling group at the "Bird and Baby," but I hadn't known about the quest until much later.

For anyone who's interested, you can read about the context of this "nugget" concerning the making of the first line in the "Hobbit" in Humphrey Carpenter's "J. R. R. Tolkien: A Biography" on page 172. With this one short line, a whole book was born.

Also, I wonder if the choice of "leaf" of paper was intentional. Tolkien wrote an allegorical short story (even though Tolkien said he hated allegory) called "Tree and Leaf." The main character, Niggle (nee Tolkien) starts painting a leaf and soon finds himself painting the whole tree to go with it. The story goes on from there and I won't spoil it for you but C.S. Lewis makes an appearance in the short story, also as another otherwise named character, whom Tolkien blames for being a constant distraction to him.

i dont know if its been said brfore but: in fotr when you read about the trip from the poney to the marshes and weather top. the narrorator(tolkien) talks about when the group of hobbits and strider are in the marshes we read that sam heres weird bugs at night and calles them neekerbreekers(someone corret my spelling i think im a bit off). and if you go to the marshes you will see none other than neekerbreekers. (sounds like someone was really paying attention here.

I did a 'search' and wasn't able to see if this has been posted or not. But, some time ago, I noticed runes on the largest stone in the circle you go to when you're defeated. After looking them up, I found they spell the word "weak", backward. I told a friend of mine, "I wonder if I should be insulted?"... ::laughs:: But, of course, I wasn't. It was just too funny.
