Re: The Riddle-Game

Wow, you guys are really honing in on it. Moon and Valacirca are so close, I'd say you both pretty much nailed it. The answer is stars

First line speaks of Varda making them for the firstborn
Second refers to the 2nd battle, battle under the stars
Third is Earendil's Star, which gave hope to the people of ME that the Ainur hadn't forgotten them
Fourth refers to the Faithful's (dunedain) and Feanor's symbols
Fifth is just their location
Last refers to the Valacirca, Varda's warning to Morgoth

Good job guys... but now we need to get ehb's riddle. Close to Halls of Mandos, eh? I'll think about it some more.

Man I think I have the answer to EHB's riddle, could it be Valinor?

A place of leaving: When the elves left to pursue Morgoth.
A place of losing: The Valar (or Mandos more specifically) banished the elves who left.
A place of remembering: This line explains itself.
and returning once more: The elves were allowed to return somewhere around the 3rd Age (I think, a more lore adept person could correct me).

Here is another easy one:
Tall and omnious, I stand alone,
spare my kin and the roaring tone.
I warn the North and keep it at bay,
yet for now my axe I will stay.
I have no sons and was never king,
and of my death some now sing.
Of my kin one remains,
Yet he has many titles and names.

Wow, you were all so close! Actually, it was the Grey Havens.
Elves leave Middle-Earth there (Place of leaving)
Sam and Merry and Pippin 'lost' Frodo there, and Middle-Earth loses the elves (Place of leaving)
It's one of the few places in Middle-Earth where the first age is remembered, by Cirdan (who might have been born at Culivien) and the Teleri who live there. (place of remembering)
It's where the elves can return to Valinor, the only other way is through the Halls of Mandos (and returning once more)

I'd say that camro is talking about Isildur or Anarion, both of whom have statues at the Gates of Argonath, but they both had sons...

I would agree that it sounds like Argonath

Ah, thats a good riddle EHB. I thought of Grey Havens but I thought that Valinor fit closer.
Nice riddle.

If that's correct I'll see if I can come up with a riddle. They've been few and far between lately, just too busy at work to really think about them. I'll try though
Ack, just realized I never came back after posting that riddle... and you were right!

I've never been great at solving riddles (much less writing them) but I'll try my hand to keep this alive, since I didnt see another one after the Argonath:

Darkness through both day and night
Shrouded within from bright sunlight
Tainted by a power unknown
With dangers crawling and overgrown
Off-road you may hear revelry
Yet stray not far, or lost you'll be!

(I'm not entirely pleased with the 5th line but I was really drawing a blank)

That was great and not too easy. My help was doing the whole Hobbit reread recently, and the lost hungry Dwarves trying to crash the Elves' party's was one of my favorite parts.

that sounds a lot like Durin's folk in Moria.

(after Mirkwood my brain's drawing a blank on a new riddle)

Opposite day? We've been waiting for a new riddle for more than a week!
Whatever happened to elves who stood amidst the field of battle in glory, like the eye of a storm, using their awe and bearing to stare down foes while they spoke like thunder and swung swords that shone with inner light? That is what I wanted to see. And that's not what this class is doing. -- What someone at Turbine should have said.

He fears nothing,
While everything fears him,

First one in,
Last one out,

There is no rest,
While he is he.

-First try at a riddle in that kind of style. So be nice.
